A Cliftleigh couple accused of attempting to import 500 grams of MDMA into Australia have been refused bail in Maitland Local Court.

Ashley Duncan, 32, and Ben Max Hamilton, 30, appeared in court on Thursday charged with attempting to import a commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported border controlled drug, possession of a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, supplying a commercial quantity of a prohibited drug and possession of a prohibited drug.
The pair did not enter any pleas or apply for bail and the matter was adjourned until Friday.
According to police, a package containing 500 grams of MDMA was detected coming into Australia in September and intercepted by authorities.
Detectives then launched an investigation into the importation and supply of MDMA in the Hunter and on Wednesday searched a home at Tarrango Street, Cliftleigh, and arrested Ms Duncan.
Mr Hamilton was arrested later on Wednesday when he returned home. The maximum penalty is life in jail.
