THE state government program designed to transform Newcastle's city centre has been named a winner in the Premier's Awards.

The mutli-agency program was a joint winner in the Building A Strong Economy category at Wednesday night's Sydney ceremony alongside the Public Service Commission's Aboriginal Employment Strategy.
The awards are designed to recognise work by individuals and teams in delivering NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian's priorities.
The project includes the Market Street lawn, Newcastle light rail, the planned bus interchange at The Store site, The Station, Museum Park at the former Civic Station site and the planned Rail Bridge Row.
Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation (HCCDC) acting chief executive Valentina Misevska said the body was "incredibly pleased" with the result.
"What is really exciting for us, though, is that work is still being delivered and benefits will truly be realised when the former rail corridor is transformed with the University of Newcastle campus, the affordable housing outcome and other mixed uses that create ore opportunity for people to work, live and play in our great city," she said."
Former program director Michael Cassel said the final result showed unity between government departments toward a single goal.
"The true success of the program has been our ability to work so collaboratively with the other government agencies to create a seamless outcome for the community," Mr Cassel, now chief executive of the Land and Housing Corporation, said.
West Wallsend High School also represented the Hunter in the winners' circle, claiming the Providing High-Quality Education category for its improvement in HSC performance.
It is the second award the school has claimed in recent months after it rose from the bottom 50 high schools in terms of student performance between the Year 9 NAPLAN and Year 12 HSC in 2014 into the top 100 across the state.
Ms Berejiklian said almost 400,000 people work for the state government to help provide vital services.
"I thank each and every one of you for your professionalism and commitment to delivering the best outcomes for NSW," she said.
"These awards acknowledge the importance of our public service and I congratulate all the award recipients and finalists," she said.
