There is no such thing as being too careful when it comes to dealing with asbestos.

Compliance is the key to ensure the safety of all involved.

Short-cuts, lack of accreditation and waiting days for results can result in devastating consequences.

Hazmat Services Pty Ltd (Hazmat) is a leading specialist OHS, Waste and Environmental services consultancy that deals specifically with hazardous materials in the workplace, and in the home.

Hazmat provides a unique consulting service offering experienced consultants in the three key areas of OHS, Waste and Environment and provide services in the broad areas of:

  • Hazardous Materials Consulting, Management and Monitoring
  • Environmental Consulting, Management and Remediation
  • Environmental Monitoring and Assessment
  • Occupational Health and Safety Monitoring
  • Occupational Hygiene Monitoring and Assessment
  • Workplace Training

Hazmat specialises in asbestos and hazardous materials management and is one of only a few companies in Newcastle that are accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) to provide asbestos analysis.

"Our in-house team of consultants and technicians are also NATA Accredited and Licensed Asbestos Assessors meaning we can provide full service and rapid turn-around of results," Managing Director and Principal Consultant Andrew Russell said. "Air monitoring, for example, is undertaken by trained, accredited and licensed personnel using calibrated and well maintained equipment and results are provided on the same day. Hazmat doesn't provide asbestos removal so we are truly independent.

"This means that we and our clients can be confident and satisfied that the risks to site personnel are monitored and reported in a timely manner, asbestos removal controls have been adequate, and a swift reaction can be made to elevated readings and adjustments to site controls."

The Hazmat team includes tertiary trained industry experts in the fields of hazardous materials, occupational hygiene, industrial chemistry, risk management, environment, workplace training and waste management.

"Hazmat is an ISO 9001 quality accredited company that operates under an integrated business management system that addresses project management, quality, health and safety, and environment," Andrew explained. "We have adopted a formal risk management system to address commercial, public relations, environmental and safety risk for all projects undertaken.

"Our in-house laboratory and team are NATA Accredited (Accreditation No. 16865) for Asbestos Fibre Counting, SMF Counting and Volume Measurement.

"Our client base is diverse, spanning commercial, industrial, residential and public and private sectors. Whilst we have a strong presence in the Newcastle and Hunter Valley, we have also undertaken large and complex projects throughout Australia and overseas in New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Papua New Guinea and Mongolia."

In addition to the legislative requirement that all workplaces constructed prior to 2004 have an Asbestos Register and Asbestos Management Plan, Asbestos and hazardous materials Registers and Management Plans are required prior to demolition or renovation or residential properties and this is often overlooked in the planning stages. Many Local Councils require these reports as part of the development consent process.

Hazmat provide these reports routinely to assist with DA compliance and to make sure your contractors know what they are dealing with when quoting the job and during the job so that the work is completed correctly and risk of exposure is minimised.

Checklist

If you suspect that you have asbestos in your residence or workplace or you are not sure, don't take someone's word for it, have it inspected and assessed by a Licenced Asbestos Assessor.

Sample analysis must only be carried out by a NATA Accredited laboratory.

All workplaces built before 2004 are required by legislation to have an asbestos register and management plan if asbestos is present.

An asbestos register is also required for residential renovation or demolition.

Removal of asbestos is required by law to be carried out by Licenced Asbestos Removal Contractor if there is greater than 10m2 of non-friable or bonded asbestos requiring removal or for any amount of friable asbestos and an asbestos clearance is required to comply with legislation prior to any other works being carried out or re-occupation.

Air monitoring must be undertaken for any friable asbestos removal work and for non-friable asbestos removal where there is a risk to nearby occupants.

Air monitoring and clearances should be undertaken by a Licensed Asbestos Assessor or Competent person who is independent from the asbestos removalist with analysis only conducted by a NATA Accredited Laboratory.
