It is a much shorter list than on Tuesday, when catastrophic weather conditions led to the closure of around 600 schools - including many in Newcastle and surrounds - and 12 school evacuations.
The department said the situation may change at short notice and asked families to monitor its School Safety website, social media channels and the news.
Families have also been asked to monitor their school's website, Facebook page and SkoolBag app.
"Parents may choose not to send their children to school if they have other supervision arrangements in place," its statement said.
"Contact your principal if you have any questions regarding your school."
However Swansea High said the list is incorrect and it will open.
Greta Public School principal Sharon Morris wrote to families on the school's Facebook page that the school hoped "you are all safe and remain so throughout the night".
The school will remain closed on Wednesday.
"Once school returns, if you or your child need further support, please reach out to us."
The University of Newcastle said in a statement it would reopen all its campuses except for Port Macquarie and Taree and all its offices, apart from Coffs Harbour.
A decision on this site will be made "as soon as possible".
"Exams will go ahead on Wednesday as planned (excluding Port Macquarie and Taree), and all other services including childcare, retail and fitness centres on our sites will reopen as per normal business," it said in a statement.
"If it is unsafe for you to travel to our sites, please do not travel and advise your supervisor.
"Students should submit adverse circumstances if they are unable to attend exams due to current conditions.
"Exams for Port Macquarie and Taree will be rescheduled soon, and students will be emailed directly with details when they are confirmed."
It said it would tell students and staff directly of changes to campus plans, as well as via its alerts page and social media.
"Thank you for your cooperation during this period of catastrophic bushfire risk," it said.
"We are aware that this is a critical time of year for our students, particularly those who have exams and assessments due, but ultimately your safety, and that of our staff and others, is what matters most."
