Newcastle have been buoyed this week after a promising performance in an historic opening round 1-1 draw against Melbourne City on Sunday. It was the first time they have taken points off the W-League heavyweights.
But the Jets coach knows his charges will be quickly grounded if they fail to turn up against an improved Wanderers outfit, who he expected to be full of confidence after beating Adelaide 2-1.
"The risk of this game is that because we had a good performance on Sunday that we could get a little complacent and think it's going to happen again," Deans said on Thursday.
"We've spoke this week about making sure that what we did against City, that we get the most out of that by making sure we win tomorrow because if we can win tomorrow then the draw in the first game becomes really important.
"If we don't win tomorrow then we're stuck on one point and people are going to start to get away from us.
"We just need to make sure we have the same hunger and attitude to work hard and stay calm and not get too carried away with a draw because we didn't win, we only got a draw, so we still have a lot of work to do."
Newcastle looked extremely dangerous in attack and caused City plenty of concern when they opened up a number of scoring opportunities.
"We created a lot of chances and on another day we might've scored two or three," Deans said.
"The understanding between Nicki [Flannery], Teigan [Collister], Jenna [Kingsley] and Tara [Andrews] in attack was pretty good.
"We've been talking all pre-season about when Tara gets on the ball to make sure we have people starting to run towards the goal and use the speed we've got as a tool to score goals, and I think we were pretty effective with that on the weekend."
Wanderers joined the W-League in 2012 and have never finished higher than sixth. But they have recruited well this campaign and are expected to unleash new signing and United States international Lynn Williams against the Jets.
"They've finished last in maybe two of the past three years, definitely in the bottom two, and they've spent a lot of money this year and brought in a lot of players and they'll be wanting to continue on from where they left off last week and want to win," Deans said.
"They've got some attacking options. Lynn Williams is going to be dangerous, so we need to keep her quiet and keep an eye on their midfielder Kristen Hamilton, who is from America as well and scored a good goal last week," Deans said.
"So they've got some weapons that we need to make sure we try to keep quiet. We want to try to keep a clean sheet and when we get our chances make sure we take them."
Deans looked set to take an unchanged squad to Parramatta. The game kicks off at 5pm and forms part of a double-header with an A-League clash to follow between Wanderers and City.
