Established in 1976, Newcastle Olympic started in the fourth division of the Northern NSW football.
They changed their name to Hamilton Olympic, under direction, when gaining promotion to first division, the NNSW State League, in 1992.
The club, based at Darling Street Oval in Hamilton South, announced the change back to Newcastle Olympic on Tuesday. It comes after the move of the Newcastle Jets Youth teams from the NNSW NPL to the NSW NPL from next season.
"The level of football in which our club participates is no longer merely a local state league," Olympic president George Sofianos said in a statement.
"The National Premier Leagues is the second tier of football in Australia. The broadcasting of the NPL and the FFA Cup has created a broader national exposure for NPL clubs across the country.
"We felt that our name needed to reflect this - that we needed to return to being known as Newcastle Olympic."'
Meanwhile, Football Federation Australia on Tuesday announced a review of the NPL over the coming months.
FFA aim to have the review complete by the end of February 2020.
It is designed to reflect on the outcomes realised since the NPL launch in 2013, identify potential improvements and clarify the role of the NPL within the national competition structure and the player pathway.
It will consider the NPL finals series, the cost of youth football in the NPL, the structure of the NPL in each state and the player points system.
