They are the quiet observer to the biggest stories as they unfold. They are our eyes watching the wins, the losses, the tragedies and the milestones. They document the moments that will come to be defining for our region.
They capture laughter, love, loss and hope. And their pictures tell the countless stories that are vital to our community. They are the beating heart of the Newcastle Herald and their coverage is without fear or favour.
Newcastle Herald photographer Marina Neil was named a finalist in the inaugural Women in Sport Photo Action Awards in May this year.
Neil, a Walkley Award-winning photographer, was named a finalist her her image from the 2018 women's rugby union grand final between the Waratahs and the Wanderers.
The Women in Sport Photo Action Awards creator Louise Evans said the finalists had all submitted "beautiful, inspirational, gutsy images".
"The images chosen to be WISPAA finalists portray the finesse and fitness of Australia's female athletes competing at all levels from club to the elite," she said.
"The images take you beyond the gender and the sport to the core of the athlete to reveal their power, skill, athleticism and passion."
Now, for the first time, you can learn the stories behind the pictures with a new Newcastle Herald series, Daily Capture.
Each weekday, a member of the Herald's respected photography team will share one of their favourite images with you, along with the untold story behind the picture, and a few pro tips to improve your own photography.
