The man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, is also accused of producing, disseminating and receiving child abuse material online.
The man appeared in court on Monday charged with a string of offences, including five counts of attempted sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 10.
He did not enter any pleas, but applied for bail and it was refused. In June, Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad detectives launched an investigation after reports a man had attempted to sexually assault a young girl known to him.
The investigation was assisted by the Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team (NSW-JACET), which is comprised of members of the Australian Federal Police and NSW Police Force.
Following extensive inquiries, detectives arrested a 34-year-old man at a home in the Hunter about 1pm on Saturday. And after his arrest, police searched two homes and seized several electronic storage devices.
