IF you are looking for an activity to build that team spirit by challenging your colleagues to work together, then the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club on the foreshore at Wickham, have an exciting alternative. Sailing the Force 24 keelboats with teammates, you'll be steering your own course on Newcastle Harbour in no time.
The club is currently offering three Corporate Sailing options which gives you the flexibility to choose the length of time you are on the water and the extent to which you want to challenge your team.
No prior sailing experience is required as a learn-to-sail component is part of each session.
NCYC's Sailing Academy manager Jacqueline Ellis said the sessions are an excellent event for staff team building. "To make a boat of five crew sail well, you need to work together as a team.
"Our three hour 'regatta' option is the most popular as it adds a bit of healthy competition into the mix. It's good to see how your team performs under pressure." The Club also presents an 'NCYC Corporate Sailing Cup' in the clubhouse afterwards based on the results of the regatta option.
"We've had some great fun with the companies that have sailed with us. Teams often dress up and we've had various offerings on the nautical theme as well as Hawaiian shirts and even a crew decked in ugly Christmas rashies," she said.
There is the option to do something different and totally unexpected by surprising your staff with an end of year 'Sailing Christmas Party'. Many Hunter business' return each year to host their staff celebrations and now with the popular Nor East Bistro catering at the Club a quality pre or post meal adds to the ease of arrangements.
The boats used for the corporate sailing activities are called Force 24s, which are a 24ft inshore keelboat. They carry one qualified instructor and up to four crew members. There are six boats available so up to 24 staff can be accommodated. Jacqueline said it was advisable to book several weeks in advance as the NCYC is becoming increasingly busy with regular learn-to-sail activities.
