Newcastle had never won in Perth in 10 previous attempts since the W-League began. The lined up against Glory in round four with a record of five draws and five losses there.

But the Jets never looked in doubt as they took maximum points at Dorrien Gardens and improved to fifth place on the league ladder in the process.

"I think mainly for the players to know that they're good enough to compete with everyone with what we've got was the main thing because the big talking point for everyone outside of us is that we won't be good enough to compete," Deans said.

"We showed that we're more than capable, so from the players' point of view it's more just positive reinforcement that they're actually good enough to compete at this level.

"And they can do it every week because we've been competitive in every game and probably a little bit unlucky to have not got something out of the Canberra game as well. The most important thing for the players is that they keep building on their self-confidence and belief, so it's good for them."

The result opened up a four-point gap over last-placed Perth, who have zero points, and put the Jets within two points of the top four as they prepare to host defending champions Sydney next weekend.

"It was important for us to get the win for our confidence but to get some points on the board and leave Perth and Adelaide, who haven't got a point yet, down the bottom and to get away from them is important," Deans said.

"We just need to keep trying to get as many points as we can. We obviously want to play in the finals but we know that's going to be difficult.

"We're going to have to win the majority of games and we've got some tough games coming up, so it was just nice to get the win and get some points on the board and stay in touch with the top four."

The Jets led 1-0 at the break after Nicki Flannery produced her first goal for Newcastle in the 25th minute. Tara Andrews ran at Perth's defence then passed to Teigan Collister on the left, whose cross found Flannery in the box to score with a left-footed volley.

Andrews then found a goal of her own directly after the break, slamming the ball into the top of the net after playing a one-two with Gema Simon in the 46th minute.

Perth hit back in the 57th minute through Spanish import Celia Jimenez.

Andrews and Flannery had chances to extend the scoreline late in the game. Flannery hit the far post in the 75th minute in a one-on-one with Perth goalkeeper Eliza Campbell. In the 80th minute, a diving Campbell saved Andrews' spot kick when the Jets were awarded a penalty for a handball in the box.

Jets midfielder Libby Copus-Brown was forced from the field in the 65th minute after a head knock but Deans said the move was purely precautionary.
