The scoreline may have been against the Jets, but so were the odds as they lined up against a side which included long-serving Matildas Chloe Logarzo, Alanna Kennedy and Caitlin Foord as well as Americans Sofia Huerta, Veronica Latsko and goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe.

But it was in-form striker Remy Siemsen who did the damage, scoring her third brace of the season and taking her individual goal tally to six in five outings.

The first goal came in the 31^st minute when she nodded on Angelique Hristodoulou's cross from the right. The second was a gift from Jets goalkeeper Claire Coelho in the 50^th. Siemsen intercepted the shot-stopper's poor pass in the box and slotted passed Coelho into the bottom right corner.

It was a blight on what was otherwise a strong performance from Coelho, who made several crucial saves to keep Newcastle in the match, including getting a fingertip to Teresa Polias's long-range bullet in the 28^th and diving to deny Kennedy's on-target free kick in the 79^th.

"The first goal I thought we could've defended a bit better," Deans said. "We won it, turned it over and they got the cross in.

"That's where we're at, not turning those balls over in those situations because it's hard enough anyway then we're making it harder for ourselves. The second one is disappointing but if you take that out it's a 1-0 game and if we had have been able to keep it like that they would've panicked more towards the end.

"But I think it's a good sign for the girls that they're slowing the game down and their subs are walking off slowly to eat up some time, so we're more than competitive and we're challenging."

Newcastle, who had recorded their first win of the season against Perth one week earlier, withstood a mountain of pressure from the Sky Blues and produced some nice passages of play. But the hosts rarely threatened Sydney's goal.

The Jets' best chances came from defender Hannah Brewer in the 75^th and midfielder Clare Wheeler in the 83^rd. Both were long-range shots and both saved by an outstretched Bledsoe.

"It's a disappointing to lose because we thought we'd be able to get something from the game, so we're disappointed with that but it's a good team," Deans said.

"I think they'll definitely be in the top two, so it's not the end of the world ... we're in the learning process but we're super competitive and I think we can cause a few upsets along the way, so we just look forward to games like that."

Defender Annabel Martin made her first start for the Jets, taking the place of Teigan Collister who had struggled with a hamstring issue through the week.

The Jets, who stayed on four points and have the bye next round, slipped from fifth the sixth spot.

In other round-five matches, Brisbane beat Adelaide 3-2, Melbourne City defeated Victory 1-0 and Canberra drew 1-1 with Perth.

Newcastle's next match is against the Roar in Brisbane on December 29.
