It can be revealed Brumbies coaches have decided to relocate players and staff because of the danger of training in adverse conditions.

The devastating fires on the south coast continue to burn, destroying homes and creating havoc for communities.

The effect in Canberra has been air quality plummeting in the past week, prompting warnings about outdoor activities.

The Canberra Cavalry, Canberra Capitals, Canberra United and Tennis ACT have all cancelled major events because of the smoke and the health risks for athletes.

The AIS has closed its facilities and the University of Canberra, where the Brumbies train, has also shut down operations.

The Brumbies were due to return to training in Canberra on Monday after their Christmas-New Year break.

But coach Dan McKellar has been monitoring conditions and assessing alternate options to ensure the team can train and be safe.

The Super Rugby season will start on January 31, the earliest kick-off in the competition's 25-year history.

It gives McKellar and his team just four weeks to prepare for round one and any loss of training time would have a major impact.

The lingering smoke from the south coast and surrounding fires could also force Brumbies and Super Rugby officials to discuss an alternate option for the opening game of the season.

The Brumbies are supposed to host the Queensland Reds on January 31 in round one.

But the smoke has been choking the city since early December and it could continue.

The Big Bash League is also watching the Canberra air quality ahead of a Sydney Thunder game against the Hobart Hurricanes on January 15.

It is hoped the smoke will clear before the Brumbies-Reds clash, but the game would have to be cancelled or moved if it is unsafe to play.

"Asking players to train in the conditions we have in Canberra wouldn't be the right thing by them," McKellar said.

"We've monitored the air quality closely, had advice from our doctor, and worked closely with Rugby Australia who have been outstanding in their support.

"At some point you've got to make the decision, we don't have a crystal ball.

"Our thoughts are first and foremost with the people who are having to deal with the terrible situation we're in, both in our region and over Australia.

"The small changes we've had to make are not even a drop in the ocean compared to what some people are going through at the moment."
