Jeffrey Jarvis, 40, did not appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court on Tuesday after he was charged with reckless wounding over the alleged random assault of a woman in Church Street.
Police have said the woman was walking south along the busy street about 4.35pm on Monday when she stopped behind a man.
Police allege the man then turned around and struck her to the face.
While the man fled the scene, bystanders came to the woman's aid, police said.
Emergency services were called and officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District arrived a short time later.
The woman was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Maitland Hospital for further treatment. Police said she has since been discharged.
Following inquiries, police went to Maitland railway station where they arrested Mr Jarvis. He did not enter a plea or apply for bail on Tuesday and the matter was adjourned to Raymond Terrace Local Court on Thursday.
