Sleep. There's never been so much interest in this wonderful part of life.

With ever-increasing evidence about the crucial role sleep plays in our overall health and wellbeing, there's been a bigger focus on the importance of investing in the right bed to help you achieve the best quality sleep.

Part of that has been a quiet evolution in the category of adjustable beds, beds that can be customised to an individual's personal needs at the press of a button, delivering a wide range of benefits, particularly for the elderly and people living with a disability.

Once only spotted in hospitals or nursing homes, new technology and smart design in today's adjustable bed range is seeing more people replacing their standard bed at home with a new adjustable version and reaping the health, comfort and mobility rewards.

Local bedding expert Karen Millington said swapping to an adjustable bed can change people's lives.

"Research shows that adjustable beds have numerous health benefits for everyone," said Karen who, along with husband Ian, owns and operates Sleepzone at Warners Bay as well as their new specialty adjustable bed store, Adjustacare.

"For the elderly, adjustable beds can help reduce pain and enhance independence, allowing them to stay in their own homes for longer and just have a better quality of life.

"They can also help those suffering from indigestion, restless legs, snoring, sleep apnoea, insomnia, asthma, diabetes, hip, knee and ankle pain, reflux, poor circulation, lower back pain and sciatica.

"We have had many customers who've told us how big an impact changing to an adjustable bed has had on the quality of their life - we had one man just this week who after three years of only being able to sleep in a recliner chair had finally been able to get back into a bed because of the support an adjustable bed gave him. It's really changed his life."

The advancements in adjustable beds, and the increased demand the Millingtons were seeing from customers, prompted their decision to expand their business with the addition of the new Adjustacare store, just two doors up from Sleepzone.

It's a natural step - the Millington family have been helping people get the ultimate night's sleep for almost half a century. While the Sleepzone store has been owned and operated by the Millingtons since 2001, the family has been in the bedding business for more than 45 years.

"We had so many people coming in to our existing store that were carers for their partners, parents, and children who needed an adjustable type of bed we realised the growing need and started planning a second store that would allow us to better serve them," said Karen.

"There are so many options in adjustable beds, both for our able-bodied and our disability clients, we thought it was important to have a specifically-focused store that allows our customers to see more in one place, catering for a whole range of needs.

"We want to remove the stigma around adjustable beds - the idea that they are only for the elderly or disabled - so that more people can experience the advantages they offer.

"Ian and I have had ours for around 14 months and the benefits we have had have been amazing."
