Now that 2020 has begun, it's a great time to set realistic goals for both the near future and six months down the road to help you maintain enthusiasm for your training.
Josh Barron, Regional Fitness Manager from Genesis Fitness, provides a few tips when putting your fitness goals into place.
Make goals realistic and achievable
When you are setting your fitness goals, it would be easy to exaggerate and make them nearly impossible to achieve.
For instance, you could set a target of bench pressing 75kg by the end of the year, but if you are only currently benching 30kg then it will be extremely difficult to do.
In this respect, you also can't make the target too easy. As an example, if you are running a kilometre in five minutes currently, your long term goal should not be just to knock five seconds off of that time in the next year. Shoot for 30 seconds instead and see if you can achieve it!
Don't forget diet
We have all heard that a person's health and fitness is only due to 25 per cent of actual exercise with about 75 per cent due to diet.
If you are setting your exercise goals, then you need to set your dieting goals as well.
You can keep it simple by making the commitment to eat less processed foods and drink less sugary liquids.
This would help most people with their fitness goals.
Or you can go one step further and look at your macros instead by committing to 40 per cent of your diet coming from protein, 40 per cent coming from carbs, and 20 per cent coming from fats.
A combination of analyzing your macros along with the amount of calories you are consuming on a daily basis will do wonders for your health and fitness goals.
