It is believed the large piece of equipment was taken from the Mount Arthur coal mine at Muswellbrook some time between 11.55am on December 31 and 5.45am on January 1.
Police say they found a Mitsubishi tipper truck burnt-out in bushland at Gibson Road, Sawyers Gully, on January 2 - they believe the truck was used to steal the bobcat from Mount Arthur.
Police are calling for anyone with information that could help investigators - particularly dash-cam footage captured in the area on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day - to contact either Muswellbrook Police Station on 6542 6999 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
In a separate matter, police are looking for the owners of a large amount of stolen jewellery seized during a raid at a home in Cessnock last month.
The loot that police found includes foreign and rare coins and currency, watches and other jewellery.
