In addition to being a celebrated singer, songwriter, actor, author, playwright and TV host, Leith is also an avid storyteller who writes children's literature.
He first hit the national stage when he contested in the 2006 series of Australian Idol, a competition he went on to win.
When he is not touring and performing, Leith spends time in his Hunter Valley recording studio where he is a highly sought after songwriter and producer.
Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said he looks forward to welcoming Leith back to the local government area and hearing about his experiences in the entertainment industry.
"It is an honour to have Damien as our Australia Day Ambassador this year and it will be wonderful to hear from him about his incredible journey since winning Australian Idol back in 2006," he said.
"Local residents who would like to hear Damien share his story are encouraged to attend the Australia Day Citizenship and Awards Ceremonies which will take place at the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre from 10am to 12noon on Sunday 26 January."
As part of our local Australia Day celebrations, there will also be a BBQ breakfast in the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre courtyard from 8 to 10am, the fourth annual Mayor's Cup Cricket Match at East End Oval from 12noon.
There will also be free entry to Cessnock and Branxton Pools between 10am and 4pm.
For those wanting to get in early with Australia Day celebrations, there will also be a free screening of Muriel's Wedding at the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre from 6.30pm on Friday 24 January 2020.
