Burdack, who is currently in Brisbane for the national youth championships, takes over the Australian Water Polo League job following Mitch Baird's two-year tenure.
Jenny MacGregor had been in charge of the Hunter women's team in 2017. Daniel Lawrence held the position from 2015.
The Hurricanes last month announced former Australian captain and two-time Olympian Daniel Marsden would return to coach the Hunter men's side this season following a three-year stint from 2011 to 2014. Dan Robinson had steered the previous three campaigns.
Round one is scheduled for next week with the Hurricanes away to the Devils at Drummoyne on Friday and Saturday. Hunter then host the Queensland Thunder in Newcastle Harbour on February 1 and Lambton Pool on February 2.
