Fire and Rescue NSW is the lead combat agency in the state for hazardous materials incidents. Contrary to popular belief, these types of incidents are not limited to industrial areas or heavy vehicle accidents. Firefighters from Newcastle and Mayfield west were called this past week to separate hazardous materials incidents in residential buildings. When not used or stored correctly, chemicals have the potential to create a dangerous situation.
Many hazardous and flammable fuels and chemicals can be found stored in home garages and workshops. Fire and Rescue NSW recommends that chemicals should always be kept in locked cabinets to prevent access by children, you should always wear the correct level of protective clothing and equipment as per the manufacturer's instructions and that chemicals should be used only for their intended purpose.
To prevent contamination to waterways and the environment, fuels and chemicals should never be poured down the drain. Always dispose of unwanted chemicals in a safe manner. You can contact your local council for more information on the disposal of chemicals.
