There are the things you would expect from bingo to bus trips, and then programs that are new and innovative like sitting yoga, dance for wellbeing and Creative Therapeutic Engagement (CTE).
With a wide range of new programs rolling in on a regular basis, SummitCare Wallsend pays attention to reviewing the success of programs to ensure they have a positive impact.
The latest project to show stunning results is the 'Drawing Memories' program.
Developed and tested as part of a PhD project conducted by Margaret Rolla from the University of Newcastle in 2012, the program was inspired by Margaret's personal connection with dementia.
The findings of her research have since been presented at four conferences both nationally and internationally. She has appeared on SBS Radio and at the Creativity and the Brain symposium in 2018.
The study showed that the program assisted residents in feeling happier, displaying less behaviours of concern and improved their sense of wellbeing.
The customised activities are based on reminiscing and memory themes and are designed to stimulate and challenge the mind.
Margaret has currently been looking at how creative expression may be helpful in communicating people's feelings and emotions, particularly for those who have difficulty in verbalising their needs.
The program is suitable for and will benefit residents with ongoing health care needs. Anyone who participates is able to leave the program at any stage with no obligation to continue.
Conducted over a period of 12 weeks, residents will be encouraged to explore different materials and mediums with an opportunity to interact with other participants in both individual and group activities.
The program aims to help residents improve their sense of wellbeing and quality of life.
Participants will be introduced to new skills and memory-stimulating activities in a fun, safe and creative environment.
"If you visit the home you will see the latest Drawing Memories art work displayed with pride in the Lavender community (pictured above)," Leisure and Lifestyle staff member and drawing memories supporter, Kath Tindall, explained.
"This collaboration based on a Van Gogh masterpiece demonstrates how art can bring people together and yet be so individual."
Having looked at a number of art-related programs in aged care, SummitCare Wallsend General Manager, Robyn Blackwell feels this program ticks so many boxes for residents because it is a more evolved and considered approach to exploring art in your senior years.
"Margaret guides individuals through a very personal, creative journey, allowing residents to overcome fears associated with 'experiencing' art," Robyn said.
"There is always a resident who says 'I can't draw, paint or do art' and by the end of their time with Marg they have produced something that is truly wonderful because they enjoyed the experimenting, guidance, freedom to explore and interpret in an encouraging environment."
