The couple who have been married 50 years, never let a day go by without reaffirming their love for each other, a cuddle and a peck on the cheek.

Joy, 87 and Geoff, 96, will celebrate Valentine's Day at Benhome today with other residents at a high tea.

To mark the universal day of love, romance and affection, Joy and Geoff shared their special story on how they became husband and wife and how they are now living out their days at Maitland's home for the aged, Benhome.

Joy was born and bred in Maitland and Geoff is a native of Scone.

They had known each other for years as Geoff's sister lived nextdoor to Joy in Tenambit.

The couple had both been married previously but lost their partners in sad circumstances.

"I convinced her she couldn't get any one better than me," Geoff said.

"I said we were both single and we might as well get together."

And so they did, marrying on January 1, 1970.

Now between them they have seven children, six grand children and one great grandchild.

"We've had our small arguments but never any big fights. When we disagree on things we always make up at the end of the day," Joy said.

Geoff, a former dairy farmer turned auctioneer for Maitland firm Swan, Murray and Hain, was also a member of the Maitland Show committee, as was Joy - both for many years.

So what advice would they give other couples on the most romantic day of the year?

"Be honest with each other, keep no secrets and say I love you at the end of the day," they said.
