What began as an affordable getaway for sailors in the late 1950s has developed into a sought-after destination for seniors and families alike at Forster.
Forster Holiday Village prides itself on offering quality, affordable accommodation for all, with discounts for ex-navy personnel and for seniors.
The village was born when nine three-bedroom units, once married quarters for Australian Navy personnel, were shipped to Forster from Jervis Bay.
Forster Holiday Village was officially purchased by the Royal Australian Navy Central Canteens Fund, the Australian Navy's welfare arm, in the early 1970's.
Since then it has been extended to include 17 two- and three-bedroom units and cottages.
Still not-for-profit, the village has undergone major upgrades, including the installation of a heated pool, an in-ground trampoline, play fort for the children, half-sized tennis court, gardens, barbecues, outdoor alfresco areas and more.
Today Forster Holiday Village is a terrific and relaxing place to holiday for everyone, from seniors looking for a break, families, couples and even sporting clubs in the region for an event.
While its grounds may have grown and the amenities changed, at its heart, Forster Holiday Village remains the same. Proceeds from the running of the village go back to supporting the welfare of navy personnel.
For those currently serving and ex-personnel, discounts are offered on accommodation. Discounts are also offered to seniors.
Manager Vivienne Goudman said the discounts offered significant savings, meaning people were able to access boutique accommodation at motel prices.
"We have a lot of repeat business from Newcastle, many of whom are pensioners returning again and again," she said.
Its position, just a one-and-a-half hour drive from the city, makes it a handy getaway.
A disability-friendly bathroom has just been introduced so that people who live with mobility issues or in wheelchairs have convenient access. Visitors to the facilities are struck by its gardens, which are beautifully maintained, as well as the comfortable outdoor living offered by the units.
Set over approximately one-and-a-quarter acres, Forster Holiday Valley is an easy walk to local waterways and just two minutes from the local bowling club.
A special service offered by the business is access to a discounted two-and-a-half hour lake exploration cruise, including a luncheon, which is organised specially for guests of the village.
