The Bears lost 2-1 to NNSW NPL and Heritage Cup defending champions Edgeworth in their opening round last week but needed a late goal to draw 1-1 with New Lambton on Wednesday night, also on the artificial surface at LMRFF.
Nathan Morris levelled with a free kick against New Lambton, who went ahead via a goal from Joel Caldwell late in the first half.
The Pool A result continued a strong tournament for New Lambton, who beat Kurri 11-3. They finish their pool matches against Edgeworth on Sunday from 2.30pm at LMRFF.
Edgeworth defeated Kurri, a Zone League Three team, 9-1 on Wednesday night at LMRFF. Josh Rose (3), Ayden Brice (2), Archie Finn, Pat Wheeler, Will Bower and Mitch Hunter scored. Aaron Comerford got Kurri's goal.
In Pool B, Minmi forfeited to Lake Macquarie on Tuesday night in their rescheduled fixture when unwilling to back up two days after their 3-2 loss to Wallsend. In Pool C, Cessnock also forfeited their midweek game against Merewether Advance. They had a washout to Adamstown in round one.
West Wallsend had a first-round washout against Lakes then defeated Wallsend 1-0.
On Saturday, West Wallsend play Minmi (6pm) at Johnston Park and Lake Macquarie take on Wallsend at LMRFF (6.30pm). Merewether and Adamstown play at Johnston Park on Saturday (4.30pm).
