The show is the comic story of two parfumerie employees who despise each other, while unknowingly being each other's secret pen pal.
Opera Hunter president Mercia Buck said head clerk Georg Nowack (played by Harold Phipps) and the newest employee Amalia Balash (Zoe Walker) are in love - just not with each other.
"In fact, you could say that it was loathe at first sight," Ms Buck said.
"Each is engaged in a passionate and anonymous correspondence with a 'Dear Friend' who they are yet to meet."
Based on the 1937 play Parfumerie, by Miklos Laszlo, the musical was first performed on Broadway in 1963, with several successful Broadway and West End revivals.
Ms Buck said the production featured some of Newcastle's best performers including Harold Phipps, Zoe Walker, Bec Kynaston, Jasper Wind, Pj Willis and Tom Hamilton.
There are eight scheduled performances of the show, with the last on Sunday, March 8.
