Newcastle travelled to Adelaide in the wake of a club-worst 7-0 rout at the hands of Melbourne Victory and needed a win or draw to avoid the wooden spoon.
The result left both sides tied on seven points but the Jets finished last with an inferior goal difference to Adelaide.
The match was tied 1-1 at the break then the Reds took a 2-1 lead in the 61st minute through Mallory Weber.
The visitors had the first real chance on goal of the match after a good sequence of play but Tara Andrews' left-footed shot glanced wide of the right post.
Nicki Flannery's left-footed strike from outside the 18-yard box in the 16th minute again came after good build-up play and was on target but was saved in the centre of the goal by Reds shot-stopper Sarah Willacy.
But it was Adelaide who struck first, when United States import converted from the penalty spot in the 24th minute after Jets defender Hannah Brewer had fouled Chelsie Dawber in the 18-yard box.
Brooks' sent her right-footed shot into the bottom right corner, past a diving Claire Coelho.
The goal was an instant boost for the hosts, who moments later came close to extending the scoreline. Jets defender Cassidy Davis made a goal-saving block on Weber's shot then Coelho made a diving save to deny Dawber.
Newcastle found an equaliser through Teigan Collister in the 37th minute. Libby Copus-Brown's free kick from the right sideline was on target and punched away by Willacy. Collister was unmarked at the back of the box and buried the ball into the net with a right-footed volley.
It was the 20-year-old second goal of the season - she scored an equaliser in an opening 1-1 draw with now unbeaten minor premiers Melbourne City.
Jets co-captain Clare Wheeler was back in the starting side after missing the Victory demolition through injury. Striker Jenna Kingsley made way for Wheeler, who brought composure and steel back into the Newcastle side.
The Jets finished the 2019-20 season two wins, one draw and nine losses.
