It's known for its huge waves, deep tubes and treacherous reef.

It's also known as a place where Mark Richards and Tom Carroll surfed in some epic battles.

This is what inspired Caves Beach artist Daniel Joyce to paint the pair - with the Pipeline wave between them - on a surfboard for charity.

The board carries the "world champions" theme. Richards won the world title four times [1979-'82] and Carroll won it twice [1983 and '84].

As part of the Evolution Charity Cup at Surfest, Daniel sketched and then painted the board live over about four hours using a "free-hand airbrush" technique.

"Technically it's spray painting," Daniel said.

The board went for more than $2300, with proceeds going to the Mark Hughes Foundation.

The Memewhile in Newcastle Facebook page has issued a news alert.

"Women aged 30-65 are most likely to carry the coronavirus without symptoms," the alert said.

"Best course of action is to quarantine them away from men and children. The Hunter Valley wine region is the designated local quarantine centre. Send women immediately.

"No contact for 14-day quarantine period."

As toilet paper mania gripped the region, Eunice from Belmont recalled the days before toilet rolls were invented.

In the 1950s in Scotland, she said, "sheets of waxed paper came in a flat box with a slot".

"This fitted into a chrome holder on the wall. The paper was neither absorbent or comfortable to use," she said.

It became a sign of status for councils and businesses to print their name and logo on each waxed sheet.

"It was fun to have a collection from your travels. My best was from Rolls Royce."

Her 80-year old grandad adopted an alternate method. He'd tear newspaper pages into "even-sized squares and thread them onto a loop of string to hang next to the toilet".

"At least you kept up with patches of the news - and the comics if you were lucky. You had something to read to pass the time."

When proper toilet rolls finally arrived, the first ones were "fairly stiff but great progress".

"We had patterned rolls a couple of decades ago, but they seem to have gone down the drain. So have coloured rolls, come to think of it," she said.

"I liked pale blue and peach - my very modern bath and loo were the latest avocado [in the 1970s]. Today's soft, pristine, extra-long rolls are bliss."
