The sport's national governing body, Water Polo Australia, had not released any statements as of Sunday afternoon but Hurricanes officials confirmed the 2020 campaign was now over following the fallout from the global pandemic.
Hunter defeated the Jets 15-14 on Saturday and 17-9 on Sunday, meaning they jumped from second last on the competition ladder to within striking distance of the top six with half-a-dozen matches left in the regular rounds.
"In the end it was a good way to finish the season," Hurricanes men's coach Dan Marsden said.
The former Olympian was disappointed his side would no longer have the chance to make finals this year.
"It's a shame for us really ... but it is what it is," Marsden said.
"Our goal was to get a couple of wins on the weekend, which we did, and then try to string a few more together and potentially play finals.
"That would have been an amazing achievement considering the players we lost and how young this side is."
Hunter's mentor said Keenan Marsden was pivotal both days while goalkeeper Lachlan Walters stood up in game two.
In the women's fixtures, the Hurricanes end the year winless after going down to hosts Adelaide 13-12 on Saturday and 12-8 on Sunday.
Already missing Gabi Sainsbury for the double header, Hunter then lost Olympic bronze medalist Jane Moran on Saturday morning followed by leading goal scorer Laura Robinson the next day.
