Firefighters from Wallsend, Cardiff and Lambton were called to a building fire in Wallsend on Sunday. Crews located a fire in a commercial kitchen on the premises and worked to quickly extinguish the blaze. Officers isolated the gas supply before fire fighters removed the gas cooking appliance from the building to fully extinguish it. A build-up of fat in and around the cook top added to the fire. This is a timely reminder for people to ensure they clean and maintain cooking areas to help prevent these types of incidents.

Later that day fire crews from Belmont and Swansea responded to a motor vehicle accident in Swansea. First arriving firefighters were faced with a two-vehicle accident with a person trapped in one of the cars. Rescue operators from Belmont used hydraulic cutting and spreading tools to remove the side of the vehicle in order to free the patient. The injured person was taken to hospital.
In the past three weeks, rescue operators from Lambton have been training to use a new piece of rescue equipment. The Arizona Vortex is a frame system mainly used during vertical rescues such as accessing patients who have fallen down cliffs. The frame provides a much safer and smoother recovery of patients. Crews were in the Glenrock state conservation area this week being guided by senior rescue instructors through a series of practical scenarios in preparation for a final assessment in coming weeks.
