Built in 1883 the four-bedroom residence at 120 Tyrrell Street retains its original features but has a contemporary extension at the rear which was designed by Dr Chris Tucker, the head of architecture within the School of Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Newcastle.
Current owners Judy and Allan bought it from him 12 years ago, instantly drawn to the property upon first inspection.
"We loved it at first sight," Judy said. "The front of the house had been kept so original yet the back extension was really interesting, cutting edge architecture with a lot of interesting features."
Known as Lathomi, in reference to the original stone cutter's cottage on the site, the property still features convict bricks.
There are high ceilings, wraparound verandahs, French doors, arched windows and a private paved courtyard. It has off-street parking and is walking distance to schools, Darby Street and the city CBD.
It is being marketed by Sam Tsiaousis of Harcourts Newcastle. Expectations for the property are around $1.75 million to $1.9 million.

Street Property's Andrew Walker is marketing 42/87 Hannell Street. It enjoys a prized north-easterly position in a sought-after complex and has a spacious open plan layout with four balconies.
"It looks up the harbour, it looks at the marina, it looks across to the city skyline," Mr Walker said. "I would expect there will be keen interest and the reason for that is it's the first time it's been offered for 19 years.
"The block itself is a low rise, it's only four levels. Some people prefer that to the high rises. And there are only 41 neighbours. There's a lot to like about it".
Inspections for all properties at the moment are by appointment due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
