Like everyone Ryan has been impacted by the global coronavirus pandemic, but the rollercoaster ride comes as she was preparing for a second Olympic appearance in Tokyo.

Last month Ryan, alongside Tess Lloyd in the 49erFX class, was officially named in the team to represent Australia at the Games before the international event was this week postponed until 2021.

"It's been a crazy few weeks," Ryan said.

"Just one month ago we were being announced in the team, two weeks ago we were packing our bags for Spain and sending boats to Japan.

"Now we have packed up everything and are doing our best to set up isolated training environments in our own homes."

Ryan welcomed the announcement by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the opportunity to improve over the next 12 months.

"The uncertainty is a huge challenge for athletes, so it's great that the IOC have made the call early on the postponement," she said.

"Now we can take a breath and reassess - but the goal is absolutely the same. In many ways, it's a pretty awesome opportunity to have another whole year to train hard and make more gains."

The 25-year-old added: "The priority for everyone right now is health, and doing the socially responsible thing to avoid things here in Australia deteriorating to the scary situation we've seen around the world. More than anything our thoughts are on the well-being of our competitors in different countries around the world, and on protecting our family and friends here at home."

Ryan, raised in Coal Point, made her Olympic debut in Rio four years ago next to older brother Will.
