Police say the 48-year-old man interacted with a woman on Locanto, a classifieds website that offers sexual services, and arranged to meet her at a home on Government Road at Cardiff about 5.15am on January 12 this year.
But shortly after her arrival, two men - armed with an ornamental sword and a metal pipe - allegedly forced their way in through the front door and assaulted the man.
The two men and the woman allegedly stole $650 in cash and fled the scene in a vehicle driven by another man.
The 48-year-old was taken to John Hunter Hospital suffering head injuries, including a fractured skull and a severe laceration, police said.

She was charged with special aggravated break-and-enter and commit serious indictable offence - inflict grievous bodily harm and possession of a prohibited drug.
Ms Dwyer remains on bail and will next appear in court on April 29.
More than a month later, following further investigations, detectives arrested 34-year-old Mitchell Neil Sullivan at Rankin Park and charged him with special aggravated break-and-enter and commit serious indictable offence - inflict grievous bodily harm.
He has been refused bail and will appear in Belmont Local Court on April 15.
Then, after another month of investigations, police arrested 19-year-old Adam Jeffrey Shortland at Wangi Wangi last Friday and he was charged with the same offence. He remains behind bars and will next appear in Toronto Local Court.
Mr Shortland has also been charged over two separate robberies.
Finally, on Wednesday, police attached to Lake Macquarie Target Action Group arrested Corey Hicks, 23, at Windale.
