FIRE RESCUE NSW HUNTER REPORT
Fire and Rescue NSW are often called upon to help fellow emergency service frontline workers. This week, firefighters from Toronto, Newcastle, Lambton, Cardiff and Charlestown responded to incidents to help Ambulance NSW paramedics. Firefighters often help remove patients from places that have restricted access where a standard stretcher is not practical. The safe movement of injured or ill patients from these locations can be difficult. Fire crews use different stretchers or rescue boards that are more manoeuvrable to help transport the patient to an ambulance.

In the early hours of Wednesday, fire crews from Raymond Terrace and Tarro responded to a fire at Irrawang High School. On arrival, crews found smoke in the administration building. Wearing breathing apparatus, they searched the building to confirm there were no occupants. A small fire was quickly extinguished. The building was then ventilated.
Also on Wednesday, firefighters from Toronto and the Hazardous Materials Response section at Newcastle were called to a chemical spill at a Kilaben Bay home. Crews located the occupant who had been mixing pool chemicals and was experiencing breathing difficulties. Firefighters in chemical splash suits and breathing apparatus contained the chemicals. Atmospheric monitoring was conducted before the area was declared safe. The resident was taken to hospital.
