Nurses to rally in Manilla, near Tamworth, and Armidale against NSW government's planned wage freeze for public sector wages

Nurses and midwives will gather in Manilla, near Tamworth, and Armidale to voice their objection to the state's wage pause for all public sector workers.

The NSW Nurses and Midwives' Association (NSWNMA) said it won't be silenced by a $1000 one-off payment, offered by the government.

It claims the wage freeze is insulting to nurses, and wants all politicians to reject the government's plan when parliament sits in Sydney on Tuesday.

The government has been in discussions about the proposal which would see frontline nurses, police, paramedics and teachers receive a one-payment in return for accepting a pause on their pay for the next 12 months.

The state wants to freeze the wages to save $3 billion in the wake of the COVID-19 economic downturn.

The NSWNMA claims the freeze would harm regional communities, and the proposed wage freeze could be blocked in the upper house.

The union said the rally would adhere to social distance guidelines and nurses would rally in their own time, with no workers to walk off the job.

Nurses will gather outside the Manilla Health Service in Court Street at 9am, and outside Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall's office in Armidale at 10.30am.
