Ashley Gordon was handed an iron-on emblem. The first Newcastle Knight would have to press the colours onto his shirt himself.
The fast young winger had played for Australian Schoolboys. He had just signed a contract for $10,000 and with that signature, he had become the first player the fledgling Newcastle club had acquired.
Gordon joins Barry Toohey in the 14th episode of the Newcastle Herald's podcast, Toohey's News, to look back on his stellar career and where the first Knight sees the direction of the team under coach Adam O'Brien.
Gordon also speaks frankly and candidly about his relation to race and unity in light of the Black Lives Matter movement, reflecting on his childhood and later career in regional and rural NSW.
