Police were called to a home in Galway Crescent, Metford about 1.30am on Saturday morning and spoke to a 20-year-old man outside the house.
When police entered the house, they found the body of Emerald Wardle inside.
The man - Jordan Brodie Miller - was arrested and taken to Maitland police station. He was later charged with murder. He has been refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Sunday.
A crime scene has been established at the home, with Port-Stephens-Hunter detectives investigating, assisted by State Crime Command's homicide squad.
Detective Inspector Ranald Urquhart said it was too early in the investigation to speculate on a motive.
"Domestic violence does not respect age, domestic violence can involve people of all ages," he said.
