Police will allege the 31-year-old man parked his vehicle near the intersection of Hunter and Merewether Streets about 7.20pm when two juveniles approached it.
The teenage boy and girl allegedly "threatened the man with a knife, demanding his car keys and phone before attempting to open the vehicle."
The pair were unsuccessful and fled along Hunter Street.
Newcastle police were called and commenced inquiries, leading them to arrest a 14-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl on Darby Street after the pair were stopped by officers.
It is alleged a search located a knife, cannabis and the 31-year-old man's car keys.
Both were charged with robbery in company and custody of a knife in a public place while the 16-year-old was also charged with drug possession.
The two teenagers were refused bail to face a children's court.
