Amey, who made his NRL debut at the end of 2017, will line-up with the Swampies in the Newcastle and Hunter Community Rugby League A-grade competition.
The 24-year-old prop, who is working as a mechanic at Warnervale and living nearby at Wadalba, attended his first training session on Tuesday night ahead of Dora Creek's opening-round clash with Group 21 newcomers the Greyhounds at Singleton on Sunday.
Amey joins the Geoffrey brothers, Royce and Matt (Macquarie), at the Swampies for 2020 as well as Kurri Kurri's Reid Alchin.
He had originally signed with Newcastle Rugby League outfit Cessnock after a Queensland Cup stint in 2019 but opted for more familiar surroundings amid the coronavirus crisis.
"I played at Dora Creek from under 15s to 17s before I went to the Knights," Amey said.
"After everything that happened [this year] I didn't really have many options and this was an opportunity to go back and play with my junior club. I want to win a premiership with Dora Creek."
Newcastle RL cancelled their main competition last month but are running alternative open grades from this weekend.
Amey, who said he recently paid back a sign-on fee to the Goannas, was unsure where 2021 would take him but revealed Sydney and England could be options.
"I've got to weight it all up, but it's a bit early to say," he said.
Elsewhere in NCHRL A-grade fixtures West Wallsend, who will be coached by former Maitland and Macquarie mentor Noel Dent, are at home to Greta Branxton, Glendale meet Thornton-Beresfield and University visit Maitland United. All three games are Saturday.
