Big waves were spotted at the entry into Newcastle Harbour off Nobby's breakwall on Wednesday afternoon, where some keen surfers hit the waves.
A group of grommets were also snapped playing in the waves on Horseshoe Beach.
Many spectators, both on foot and bikes, also turned out to the breakwall to watch the action from the shore.
Waves of up to nine metres were recorded at Norah Head on Wednesday morning, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
A hazardous surf warning has been in effect in the Hunter region since Tuesday and will remain in place on Friday.
