Adamstown's first-round victory over Charlestown Azzurri would have surprised many in the Northern NSW NPL ranks, but not Shane Cansdell-Sherriff.

The Rosebud coach's only surprise was the 1-0 win from last season's wooden-spooners came without the performance he expected.
Adamstown scored early through a deflected strike then held firm. They face a tougher task on Sunday when they host defending champions Edgeworth, who opened with a 4-1 victory over Maitland in a grand final rematch.
Cansdell-Sherriff, though, believed his side had plenty of room for improvement.
"It was good to get three points, especially first game of the season, it's always great to get off to a good start," Cansdell-Sherriff said.
"But performance-wise, it wasn't particularly good. We played two friendly games prior to the season and I thought we were better in both. We played Maitland and lost, but I thought we played better. It's a good sign to not play your best and still walk away with three points.
"There's much to improve. I don't know if it was a bit of nerves or the fatigue that set in as the game went on. It gave Charlestown a bit of hope to maybe nick one.
"Obviously this week playing someone like Edgeworth is a different challenge altogether. There's a lot quality in their side and a lot of experience as well. They are well organised, but it's a new day.
"We've got a game plan and if we do it right, take the game to them, you never know ... there's enough ability in our team to get a result."
Adamstown will be without Tyson Cummings, who copped a second yellow card late last week. Cansdell-Sherriff is returning to the field this season but missed the first round with a calf strain. He has trained since and may play on Sunday.
Edgeworth's only injury concern was Will Bower. Eagles boss Keelan Hamilton, who stepped up on season's eve to take over from Damian Zane, said Bower had a hamstring complaint.
Like Adamstown, Lake Macquarie take on a 2019 grand finalist on Sunday after impressing in round one.
The Roosters, who finished a point above Adamstown last year, pushed a star-studded Lambton Jaffas all the way in a 1-0 loss. They face reigning premiers Maitland at Cooks Square Park.
Lakes coach Josh Rufo was proud of the players' effort in his first game in charge.
"The work rate and the attitude was fantastic," Rufo said. "The result was disappointing but the overall performance was really positive and on another day we should have been two or three up at half-time.
"We'll stick to our principles and how we're trying to play and I think if we match [Maitland] in work rate and attitude, we'll make the game competitive."
Maitland coach Mick Bolch said Sean Pratt (ankle) should be back but Carl Thornton (ankle) was in doubt. Matt Comerford (hamstring) is out.
Also Sunday, Broadmeadow host Azzurri at Magic Park. On Saturday, Jaffas play Weston at Edden Oval and Olympic welcome Valentine to Darling Street Oval.
"We let ourselves down with some poor defensive reads and errors," Bolch said of the loss to Edgeworth.
"I think we had 11 shots on target versus six, and they scored four goals. They are going to be title contenders massively again, but we just made some schoolboy errors."
"Lakes set up well with two blocks of four and got everyone behind the ball and made it hard which I'm sure they'll do again on the weekend.
"We've just got to take our chances."
