Hughes won aboard Lilys Reactor and Azur Express for Harmey, who had a victory in between with Britney Jane.
While Harmey is a runaway winner of the Newcastle trainers' title with five meetings left, Hughes and Tom Ison are locked in a match race for the driving crown.
Ison started the meeting on 54 winners - one ahead of Hughes - and took out the opening race with Stuart Dawson's Glen Innes Lad.
After Hughes' double, Ison looked to have a great chance to lead again with $1.55 favourite Miss Streisand in the last for boss Roy Roots jnr.
However, the former Queensland Oaks runner-up finished well back in eighth in her first start since March.
The winner was the shock result of the night, eight-year-old $101-shot Our Sir Ivanhoe for trainer Shannon Lindsay and owner Stacie Elliott. Breanna Lindsay gave the veteran a perfect run behind the leader before he stormed home to win by 4.6m in 1:55:3 for the mile.
Elliott had a training win with Corporal Jujon, which also won on Friday night. My Blue Heeler and Britney Jane also won at back-to-back Newcastle programs.
