Racing NSW is buying the Cessnock course from Newcastle Jockey Club as part of plans to close it to racing and convert it into a pre-training facility. The sale will partly fund the building of the NJC's new raceday stalls at Broadmeadow. The deal is expected to be finalised soon and Cessnock have no more race dates listed.
The track on Sunday was rated a heavy 10 after an inspection by stewards, who said there was "particular areas of concern near the 400m and the crossing after the winning post. A further inspection will take place at 6:30am to determine whether the meeting proceeds."
Stewards on Monday "deemed the track unsafe to race on following 42mm of rain over the past week".
"Cessnock race meeting has been postponed due to the state of the track, with surface water present near the 400m and an unsafe section near the crossing."
