The auction began on Friday, August 28. Interested parties can view the artwork and learn the background through the foundation's loveartnewcastle.com.au website, which will lead them to the bidding platform, galabid.
Minimum prices have been set for all the works. Bidding closes at 7pm on Tuesday, September 8.
The artists are Michael Bell, Kerrie Coles, Lotti Consalvo, Virginia Cuppaidge, James Drinkwater, John Earle, Susana Enriquez, Peter Gardiner, Jane Lander, Peter Lankas, Paul Maher, David Middlebrook, Rachel Milne (pictured), John Morris, Jo O'Toole, Christine Ross, Belinda Street and Lezlie Tilley.
Artists will receive 70 per cent of the proceeds of the sale of their work and 30 per cent will go to support Newcastle Art Gallery via the foundation.
The website includes individual video interviews with all 18 artists.
Foundation vice chair Gael Davies said the works are particularly significant during the pandemic.
"Most of them were created during lock down, giving them a particular poignancy and a sense of place which we believe will resonate with potential purchasers," she said.
The foundation, chaired by Susan Galwey, is an independent non-profit organisation and a registered charity which exists to provide philanthropic support for Newcastle Art Gallery.
