The male driver's diagnosis has launched a major contact tracing operation. He tested positive on Saturday and NSW Health said anyone who entered his taxi between September 8 and 18 should monitor for symptoms.
The taxi trips during that time spanned the suburbs of Moorebank, Bankstown, Chipping Norton, Liverpool, Lidcombe, Warwick Farm and Milperra.
Early investigations indicate the driver contracted the virus at Liverpool Hospital. He had the COVIDSafe app which is being used to identify contacts.
In NSW there was also one new coronavirus-related death overnight.
A man in his 70s, whose COVID-19 infection was linked to the Sydney CBD cluster, died on Saturday taking the overall number of deaths in NSW to 55.
There were 13,635 tests done in the 24-hour reporting period, compared with 15,239 in the previous 24 hours.
Locations linked to known cases, advice on testing and isolation, and areas identified for increased testing can be found here: https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/latest-news-and-updates.
"While the number of locally acquired cases recorded in the past 24 hours continues to be low, the virus is likely still circulating and it is imperative anyone displaying mild symptoms get tested immediately and not delay their test, particularly with school holidays upon us, in order to stop further spread." a statement from NSW Health said.
NSW Health is treating 78 COVID-19 cases, including two in intensive care, one of whom is being ventilated. Eighty-six per cent of cases being treated by NSW Health are in non-acute, out-of-hospital care.
