Police were called to a hotel on the Pacific Highway at Charlestown about 11.40pm on Monday after reports that a man was acting aggressively in the area.

When they arrived at the scene, officers spoke with 35-year-old Carrington man Timothy Andrew Sharman - a former NSW Police probationary constable.

Police allege Mr Sharman allegedly became confrontational with the officers.

The 35-year-old allegedly punched and kicked the two constables several times while they were trying to arrest him.

Police said in a statement on Tuesday the officers had been unable to restrain Mr Sharman after using capsicum spray and a taser, so they called for backup.

After more police arrived at the scene, the 35-year-old allegedly threatened to stab officers with a syringe.

But he was restrained and arrested soon after.

The 35-year-old was taken John Hunter Hospital for treatment, before being transferred to Belmont Police Station where he was charged.

The two injured police officers were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment of their wounds.

Police said both constables sustained injures to their faces - one officer required stitches.

Mr Sharman was charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer in the execution of duty causing actual bodily harm, two counts of resisting or hindering a police officer in the execution of their duty, one count of using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and one count of being armed with the intent to commit an indictable offence.

He was refused bail and appeared at Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday.

In court, Mr Sharman did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

Nor did he lodge any pleas over the charges.

Magistrate David Price adjourned the matter to the end of this month, with Mr Sharman expected to face Belmont Local Court via audio-visual link on Wednesday, September 30.
