A man has been charged after a suspicious item was found at Williamtown RAAF Base on Wednesday afternoon.

Port Stephens-Hunter Police were called to the defence facility about 1.40pm after the suspicious item was located.
An exclusion zone was established and with the assistance of specialist resources, the item was found not to be an explosive and the scene was declared safe about 4pm.
Officers launched an investigation into the incident and following inquiries, a 60-year-old man was arrested at a Lake Macquarie home later that afternoon.
He was taken to Belmont Police Station and charged with leave/send substance/article create false belief of danger.
The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on October 19.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
