Dozens of workers took part in the delicate overnight operation, which required Newcastle Road to be closed for 13 hours.
"Crews had to use a 400-tonne all-terrain crane to lift the truss into position," Roads Minister Andrew Constance said on Sunday.
"Crews worked for 15 hours straight to ensure it was safely placed and secured before the crane could be moved out of the way and Newcastle Road reopened."
The 34-metre long bridge, which was built in Wodonga, is a steel arch design and a red hue in colour.
It is expected to open early next year and will improve traffic flows on Newcastle Road ahead of the delivery of the fifth and final stage of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass.
"The pedestrian lights just west of the ramp will be removed when it opens to pedestrian and cycle traffic next year," Mr Constance said.
The next stage of early work on the bypass will include site preparation and utility relocations in New Lambton Heights, likely to begin early next year.
The $15 million bridge project helped sustain 45 full-time positions and provided work for 62 contractors, Mr Constance said.
