The Radio Waves: A Drive-In Concert will be held on November 28 at Morisset Showground, catering for up to 480 cars.
COVID-19 has decimated the entertainment and arts industry and its support businesses. One Lake Macquarie business who has suffered a downturn is Morisset music production company, Silhouette Sound, who have staged events for more than 25 years including the Newcastle Foreshore New Year's Eve celebration and the Dungog Street Festival.
Morriset rotarian Suzie Shing, who last year organised the Time Out Festival in the western Lake Macquarie suburb, partnered with Silhouette Sound to launch Radio Waves as a means to reactivate the local entertainment industry.
"They basically felt they had people who had no income coming in and thought it's a good thing to at least generate some activity for artists and all the industries that go along and support entertainment," Shing says.
"Whether that's the security guys, the guys putting the stage together and the lighting. None of those guys have had any work and they've been forced to do other things."
David Bowie tribute artist Jeff Duff and Newcastle blues-rockers The Steve Edmonds Band will join Shorrock and Little Quirks on the bill.
The audience will adhere to social distancing in their cars and be able to listen to the music live from the stage or broadcast through their radios.
Tickets are $200 per car, with up to five people permitted per vehicle. Punters can bring their own food and drinks, but gazing plates can also be pre-ordered.
Drive-in gigs have become increasingly popular throughout the world as concert promoters struggle for ways to host COVID-safe events.
Former Australian Idol winner Casey Donovan played a drive-in show in Sydney in May and The Beach Boys will perform a concert to 700 cars in San Diego next week.
"It's a bit nostalgic, too," Shing says. "You go along in your car and put on your radio. It's something familiar, but slightly different."
