About 9.15pm Monday emergency services were called to Bareki Road near Eleebana Road, Eleebana, following reports of a head-on crash involving two cars.

It is believed a blue Honda Civic sedan travelling in a southerly direction failed to negotiate a bend and crossed onto the incorrect side of the road and collided with a silver Ford Mondeo sedan, travelling in the opposite direction.

The 46-year-old male driver of the Civic was trapped before being freed by emergency services. He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being conveyed to John Hunter Hospital with serious internal injuries. He remains in a critical condition.

The 36-year-old male driver and 31-year-old front seat passenger of the Ford Mondeo sedan were not injured during the crash; the 5 year old and 6-week-old girls seated in the back seat suffered head injuries.

Both girls were taken to the John Hunter Hospital for treatment. The six-week-old girl remains in a critical condition.

Officers from Lake Macquarie established a crime scene, while the Hunter Region Crash Investigation Unit have commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

As investigations continue, police are appealing to anyone who might have been in the area of Eleebana Road around 9.15pm last night or those who have dashcam footage, to come forward.
