More than 1 million coronavirus infections have been registered in France since the beginning of the pandemic, according to official figures.
French health authorities said there had been a total of 1.04 million confirmed cases in the country of 67 million people by Friday evening.
A record 42,032 new infections were reported on Friday for the previous 24 hours.
From Saturday, the night-time curfew imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus is due to be extended over two-thirds of the country's residents.
The curfew would then apply in 54 of France's administrative regions, or departments, and the overseas territory of French Polynesia.
France will have to live with the coronavirus at least until next summer, President Emmanuel Macron says.
"When I listen to scientists I see that projections are for at best until next summer," he said, adding it was too early to say if France was headed towards new full or partial lockdowns.
So far, more than 34,500 people have died in France in connection with coronavirus infections.
