Matterson, based at Sawyers Gully, died over the weekend following a short battle with illness. He was 85.

Harness Racing NSW chief executive officer John Dumesny led the tributes.

"The harness racing fraternity is saddened by the passing of Newcastle trainer Barry Matterson overnight," Dumesny released in a statement on Saturday.

"Indisputably a master horseman Barry was one of the most astute men in harness racing, his knowledge being sought by both young and old. Barry's respect of and politeness towards others was exemplary. His list of achievements as were the outstanding horses he trained lengthy."

Matterson was previously awarded the Dick Osborn Medal by Newcastle Harness Racing Club.

New York Fashion was a successful runner named Newcastle horse of the year in 2009 after claiming the group 1 Breeders Challenge (3YO fillies) and group 3 Gold Bracelet.

Meanwhile, Tamworth's Jemma Coney and Sawyers Gully's Stacie Elliott both scored doubles, driving and training respectively, at Newcastle International Paceway on Friday night.

Coney struck success with Darren Elder's Arbit Major and father Greg's Run From Terror, which looks set to contest a 2YO Breeder's Challenge heat at the same track later this week.

Thirteen-year-old gelding Christian Brother, prepared by Lisa McDonald at Fullerton Cove and steered by Grace Panella, recorded a 13^th career win in what was his 286^th start.
